EDITORS COMMENTS
Margaret of Austria's Palace, also known as Hof van Savoye, is a magnificent 16th-century building located in the historic city of Mechelen, Belgium. Designed by Rombout Keldermans, the city architect of Mechelen and court architect to Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, this architectural masterpiece is considered one of the first Renaissance buildings in northern Europe. The palace, named after Margaret of Austria, regent of the Netherlands from 1507 to 1530, was built between 1502 and 1521. Keldermans skillfully combined traditional Flemish brickwork with Renaissance elements, creating a unique and impressive architectural style. The building's facade is adorned with intricate brickwork, including decorative arches, columns, and balustrades. This photograph, taken circa 1910, captures the grandeur of the palace as it once appeared. The large, imposing structure dominates the street, its brickwork glowing in the sunlight. The balcony on the second floor, with its ornate iron balustrade, offers a glimpse into the opulent interior. The pavement in front of the palace is lined with trees, adding to the serene atmosphere. The palace's history is rich and varied. It has served as a royal residence, a military fortress, and a school. Today, it is a popular tourist destination and a symbol of Belgium's architectural heritage. The intricate brickwork, elegant balconies, and grand scale of Margaret of Austria's Palace continue to captivate visitors and inspire architects and designers around the world.
