1737 1805 Beraud Charlotte Guillotine Haye Jeanne Josephine Marquise Orleans Plays Saved Riou

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking portrait, the Marquise de Montesson, Charlotte Jeanne Beraud de La Haye Riou, is depicted in elegant attire, a testament to her noble status. Born in 1737, she was the wife of Philippe Eugène, Duke of Orleans, a brother of King Louis XVI of France. The Marquise was saved from the guillotine during the French Revolution, thanks to the intervention of Empress Josephine. During her life, the Marquise was known for her intelligence and wit, and she authored several plays under the pseudonym "Mademoiselle de Montesson." Her works were well-received in the literary circles of the time, adding to her reputation as a woman of great talent and sophistication. The Marquise's marriage to the Duke of Orleans was a politically advantageous one, as it strengthened the ties between the House of Orleans and the House of Bourbon. However, their relationship was not without its challenges. The Duke was known for his womanizing ways, and there were rumors of infidelity on both sides. Despite this, the Marquise remained loyal to her husband, and they had three children together. During the French Revolution, the Marquise found herself in danger when the Duke was arrested and sentenced to death. Empress Josephine, who was sympathetic to the Duke's cause, intervened on his behalf and managed to secure his release. The Marquise was also spared, thanks to Josephine's intervention. The Marquise de Montesson continued to live in France after the Revolution, and she died in 1805. Her plays were published posthumously, ensuring that her literary legacy lived on. This portrait captures the grace and elegance of a woman who defied the challenges of her time and left a lasting impact on French literature and history.
