EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, Russian writer Maxim Gorky (1868-1936) is seen in deep conversation with composer, poet, and folk musician Stepan Gavrilovich Petrov, also known as Stepan Skitalets (1869-1941). The setting is the early 20th century, and the two intellectual giants are gathered in a quiet, intimate space, surrounded by the rustic charm of traditional Russian decor. Maxim Gorky, a founder of the Socialist Realism literary method and a political activist, is dressed in a simple, dark suit, his eyes focused intently on Petrov. The composer, poet, and musician, known for his nomadic lifestyle and his deep connection to Russian folklore, is shown in the act of playing a Shlemovidnye Gusli - a helmet-shaped, plucked stringed instrument that is a cherished symbol of Russian musical tradition. Skitalets came to Moscow with Gorky, where he joined the Sreda, a literary group founded by Nikolay Teleshov. This influential collective included many of Russia's most popular authors and artists, such as Leonid Andreyev, Ivan Bunin, Fyodor Chaliapin, Gorky, and Anton Chekhov. In 1902, Skitalets' first collection of stories and poems was published by Gorky's company, Znanie (Knowledge). The photograph captures a moment of creative synergy between two brilliant minds, united by their shared love for Russian culture and their commitment to preserving its rich heritage. The image is a testament to the power of intellectual exchange and the enduring influence of tradition on the artistic and literary landscape of Russia.
