EDITORS COMMENTS
This enchanting engraving, hailing from the Italian edition of Ovid's Metamorphoses published in Venice in 1584, captures the essence of Book I, which recounts the creation of the world and the fateful battle between the gods and the giants. The image opens with the creation scene, where Chaos gives birth to the primordial deities, and from their union, the world and all its inhabitants emerge. The lower half of the print unfolds the epic battle between the gods, led by Jupiter, and the giants, who had dared to challenge the divine order. The gods, armed with their celestial powers, wreak havoc upon the giants, leaving only a few survivors. Amidst the chaos, Decaulion and Pyrrha, the sole survivors of the giants, are shown seeking refuge. They are discovered by Apollo, who, in his mercy, transforms them into stones, thus saving their lives. The serpent, coiled around Apollo's staff, symbolizes the god's power and wisdom. Ovid's Metamorphoses, a twelve-book epic poem, is renowned for its rich storytelling, transforming mythology into a captivating narrative. This engraving, with its intricate details and vivid imagery, serves as a visual testament to the power of Ovid's storytelling and the enduring allure of mythology.
