Mexico (1821): Triumphal Entrance of Agustín de Iturbide into Mexico City with the Trigarante Army (7th September, 1821) This historic litograph depicts the triumphant entry of Agustín de Iturbide into Mexico City on September 7, 1821, marking the end of the Mexican War of Independence from Spain. Iturbide, a Mexican military commander, had allied with the insurgent forces led by Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla and José María Morelos to overthrow Spanish rule. In this image, Iturbide is shown riding a horse at the head of the Trigarante Army, which had recently defeated the Spanish forces in the Battle of Mexico. The crowd gathered in the city's main square welcomes Iturbide with open arms, waving flags and waving their hats in celebration. The Mexican flag, which had been adopted by the insurgent forces, flies proudly above the city. The significance of this moment is evident in the jubilant expressions of the people and the military might of the Trigarante Army. Iturbide's entrance into Mexico City marked the beginning of the First Mexican Empire, which lasted until 1823. The empire was short-lived, but it laid the foundation for Mexico's eventual independence and the establishment of a national identity. This litograph is a testament to the courage and determination of the Mexican people in their fight for independence. It is a reminder of the rich history and cultural heritage of Mexico and the pivotal role it played in shaping the modern world. The image captures a moment of triumph and hope, as the people of Mexico looked forward to a brighter future free from Spanish rule.
