EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait captures the determined spirit of Mildred Mansel (1868-1942), a dedicated suffragette and prominent member of the Women's Social and Political Union (W.S.P.U) in the early 1900s. Born in England, Mildred was a key figure in the suffrage movement during the critical period of 1912 to 1914. Her unwavering commitment to women's rights led her to be arrested and imprisoned for her activism. The photograph, taken circa 1910, shows Mildred as a confident and resolute woman, her piercing gaze and stern expression reflecting her unyielding determination. Her membership in the W.S.P.U, a militant organization led by Emmeline Pankhurst and her daughters, placed her at the forefront of the suffrage movement's most daring actions. Mildred's activism extended beyond the borders of her homeland. In 1914, she traveled to Paris to visit Christabel Pankhurst, another influential suffragette leader in exile. Her important role in the W.S.P.U during these pivotal years contributed significantly to the eventual success of the suffrage movement, which culminated in the Representation of the People Act of 1918, granting some women the right to vote in the United Kingdom. This evocative portrait offers a glimpse into the past, reminding us of the courageous women who fought for women's suffrage and paved the way for future generations to enjoy the political rights we have today.
