EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, Millicent, Duchess of Sutherland (1866-1965), is seen returning from the front lines of World War I, accompanied by Dr. Morgan, in The Hague after a harrowing journey from Namur. The Duchess, an aristocratic woman of great class and distinction, had led a party of dedicated nurses to the heavily bombarded town of Namur in Belgium, where they established a makeshift hospital to care for the wounded soldiers. As the situation worsened, the group was forced to evacuate Namur and relocated to Maubeuge and then Brussels. After enduring numerous hardships and harrowing experiences, they were granted a pass by the Germans to travel to neutral Holland. In this image, taken in 1914, the Duchess is seated in the foreground, her weary yet determined expression softened by the bouquet of flowers she holds. Dr. Morgan, standing behind her, looks on with pride and admiration. The Duchess of Sutherland's courage and commitment to the cause were emblematic of the many upper-class women who defied societal expectations to serve as nurses during the First World War. Her actions, and those of her fellow nurses, were a testament to the indomitable spirit and selflessness of the era, as they put their own safety aside to care for the wounded soldiers on the battlefield. This historical photograph, with its poignant and powerful imagery, serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during the Great War.
