Anne Baroness Gerard Louise Saloniste Stael

EDITORS COMMENTS
Mme de Stael, née Anne-Louise Philippe de Gerlache, Baroness de Stael-Holstein (1766-1817), was a renowned French writer, intellectual, and saloniste of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Born into a noble family, she was raised in Sweden after her mother's marriage to a Swedish count. Her education was unconventional for women of her time, and she became fluent in several languages, including English, German, and Italian. This portrait of Mme de Stael, painted by an unknown artist, showcases her intellectual brilliance and charisma. The image reveals her piercing gaze, expressing both intelligence and intensity. Her elegant attire, adorned with a pearl necklace and a feather in her hat, exudes sophistication and refinement. Mme de Stael was a prolific writer, best known for her novels "Corinne, or Italy" and "Delphine," as well as her influential essay "On Literature." She was a pioneer in promoting the works of German literature to the French public, and her salon in Coppet, Switzerland, was a hub for European intellectuals, including Goethe, Byron, and Benjamin Constant. Despite her many accomplishments, Mme de Stael's personal life was marked by tragedy and scandal. Her passionate love affair with Benjamin Constant led to her separation from her husband, and her political activism during the French Revolution resulted in her exile from France. This portrait serves as a testament to Mme de Stael's enduring legacy as a trailblazing figure in French literature and culture. Her groundbreaking ideas, intellectual pursuits, and captivating personality continue to inspire and intrigue scholars and readers alike.
