This 19th century colored engraving depicts a pivotal moment in the history of the Americas, as the fates of three great figures intertwine: Moctezuma II, Hernan Cortes, Pedro de Alvarado, Gonzalo de Sandoval, and Cristobal de Olid. Moctezuma II, the last Aztec Tlatoani (ruler) of Tenochtitlan, is shown seated regally, adorned in his traditional feathered headdress and cloak. Behind him, the magnificent Aztec city of Tenochtitlan rises in the background. Before Moctezuma stands Hernan Cortes, the Spanish conquistador who would ultimately bring an end to the Aztec Empire. Cortes, dressed in his armor and holding a cross, conveys a sense of determination and resolve. To his left, Pedro de Alvarado, another prominent Spanish conquistador, stands with a stern expression, ready for battle. Gonzalo de Sandoval, a Spanish ally of Cortes, is depicted on the right side of the image. Sandoval, a skilled naval commander, played a crucial role in the Spanish conquest of the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico. Cristobal de Olid, another Spanish conquistador, is shown at the bottom of the image, kneeling before Moctezuma, representing the submission of the Aztecs to the Spanish invaders. This powerful image encapsulates the complex and tumultuous history of the conquest of the Aztec Empire by the Spanish conquistadors in the 16th century. The meeting of these three great figures marks a turning point in the history of Mexico and the broader history of the Americas, as the Spanish colonization of the New World began in earnest.
