EDITORS COMMENTS
Mrs. Gisborne, also known as Madame Yevonde, was a renowned British portrait photographer of the early 20th century. Born in 1893 as Evelyn Mary Billington, she adopted the professional name Yevonde after her marriage to Sir Reginald Gisborne in 1920. Her unique photographic style, characterized by its theatricality and surrealism, set her apart from her contemporaries. This portrait of Mrs. Gisborne, taken by an unknown photographer, showcases her striking appearance and magnetic personality. Dressed in an elegant gown and adorned with pearls, she exudes an air of sophistication and mystery. Her piercing gaze, accentuated by heavy eyeliner and a bold red lip, draws the viewer in, inviting them to delve deeper into her enigmatic world. Mrs. Gisborne's photographic career began in the 1920s, and she quickly gained a reputation for her innovative techniques and unconventional approaches to portrait photography. She is perhaps best known for her series of "Fantasy Portraits," in which she used elaborate costumes, props, and special effects to transform her subjects into mythological or historical figures. These images, which defied the conventions of the time, were both celebrated and controversial. Despite her groundbreaking work, Mrs. Gisborne's career was cut short by her untimely death in 1962, at the age of 69. Today, her photographs continue to captivate audiences and inspire new generations of artists. This evocative portrait of Mrs. Gisborne serves as a testament to her enduring legacy and the indelible mark she left on the history of portrait photography.
