51st Highland Division Memorial, Schijndel, Holland
To British eyes this is probably the most beautiful traditional war memorial in Holland. It is a statue of a kilted Highlander looking down on a delightful young Dutch girl. The attitude and facial expression of the figures tells all there is to say about the Liberation: the happy trusting face of the girl, the dependable, strong yet gentle face of the soldier. It is reminiscent of the Highlander at the head of Y Ravine at Beaumont Hamel on the Somme. The legend on the Memorial describes how on the 23rd October 1944 the 51st Highland Division launched an offensive from this position that cleared a large area south of the River Ms between Schijndel and Gertruidenberg and took over 2, 800 prisoners. Date: 2000

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the 51st Highland Division Memorial in Schijndel, Holland, a poignant tribute to the liberation of the Netherlands during World War II. The memorial stands out as one of the most beautiful traditional war memorials to British eyes, featuring a striking statue of a kilted Highlander gazing down upon a young Dutch girl. The serene expressions on both figures encapsulate the essence of the liberation: the trusting, happy face of the girl, and the dependable, strong yet gentle face of the soldier. The statue is reminiscent of the iconic image of the Highlander at the head of Y Ravine at Beaumont Hamel on the Somme, symbolizing the unwavering courage and resilience of the Scottish soldiers. The inscription on the memorial reads that on the 23rd of October 1944, the 51st Highland Division launched an offensive from this position, clearing a large area south of the River Ms between Schijndel and Gertruidenberg and taking over 2,800 prisoners. This photograph, taken in the year 2000, serves as a powerful reminder of the historical significance of the 51st Highland Division's role in the liberation of Holland and the enduring bond between the Dutch and Scottish peoples. The memorial stands as a testament to the sacrifices made during the war and the enduring spirit of unity and friendship that emerged from the darkest of times.
