6th Airborne Division Stained Glass Windows, Ranville

There are two windows. One is to 6th Airborne and the other to St George. The first was unveiled in 1969 and the second in 1960. They are in a side-chapel in Ranville church. The area around the church became a Royal Engineers assembly area shortly after D-Day and as the first burials were made in the field beside the church the RE made a hole in the wall around the church to make it easier to move from one to the other. The gap is still there and allows easy access to the small Commonwealth War Graves plot in the church grounds. Date: 2009

1960 1969 Airborne Area There They Unveiled Windows Side Chapel

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, two stained glass windows stand proudly in the side chapel of Ranville Church in Normandy, France. The windows, dedicated to the 6th Airborne Division and St. George, add a touch of solemn beauty to the historic place of worship. The window on the left, depicting the 6th Airborne Division, was unveiled in 1969, while the window on the right, featuring St. George, was dedicated in 1960. These windows serve as a poignant reminder of the significant role the 6th Airborne Division played in the D-Day landings on June 6, 1944. The area around the church became a Royal Engineers assembly area shortly after D-Day, and as the first burials were made in the field beside the church, the RE made a hole in the wall around the church to make it easier to move from one to the other. The gap is still there and allows easy access to the small Commonwealth War Graves plot in the church grounds. The intricate designs of the stained glass windows capture the essence of the division's history and the reverence for the sacrifices made during the war. The 6th Airborne Division window showcases paratroopers in mid-jump, while St. George, the patron saint of soldiers, stands proudly on the other window. This photograph, taken in 2009, offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when the world was forever changed by the events of D-Day. The windows serve as a testament to the bravery and resilience of the soldiers who fought for freedom and the enduring spirit of the community that came together to honor their memory.
