EDITORS COMMENTS
Adam de Cambrai, the first president of the Parlement de Paris, is depicted in this stunning handcoloured lithograph from the portfolio "Costumes Historiques de la France" by Paul Lacroix. Dated back to 1456, the portrait shows Adam wearing the traditional attire of high-ranking officials during the late Middle Ages in France. He is seen wearing a calotte bonnet, a conical hat with a round top and a narrow brim, which was a symbol of authority and power. The president's robes are made of black velvet, a luxurious fabric that signified wealth and prestige. The collar and cuffs of his garment are also trimmed with black velvet, adding an elegant touch to his attire. Adam de Cambrai served as the president of the Parlement de Paris, the supreme court of appeal in the Kingdom of France, during the reign of King Charles VII. The Parlement was responsible for interpreting and applying the law, as well as advising the monarch on matters of state. As the head of the court, Adam de Cambrai played a crucial role in the administration of justice and the governance of the realm. This beautiful portrait of Adam de Cambrai was created in the Chartreux convent and is part of the extensive collection of historical costumes compiled by Roger de Gaignières and published by the Bibliophile Jacob under the title "Costumes Historiques de la France" in 1852. The meticulous attention to detail in the lithograph, from the intricate patterns on the calotte bonnet to the rich textures of the velvet fabric, offers a fascinating glimpse into the fashion and style of the late Middle Ages in France.
