EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcolored engraving, created by Choubard after an original illustration by Delarue, is taken from the prestigious "Universal Dictionary of Natural History" by Charles d'Orbigny, published in Paris in 1849. The image features two striking butterfly species, the Adonis Morpho (Morpho adonis 1) and Pavonia anaxandra (Pavonia anaxandra 2, 3, with possible identification of Dasyophthalma creusa for Pavonia). The Adonis Morpho, with its iridescent blue wings adorned with black markings, is a well-known and beloved species of the Morpho family. Its wingspan can reach up to 12 centimeters, making it a prominent sight in the tropical rainforests of Central and South America. The Pavonia anaxandra, on the other hand, is a less commonly depicted species, with its wings displaying a vibrant orange and black pattern. The smaller size of this butterfly, with a wingspan of about 6 centimeters, belies its beauty and intricacy. This engraving, with its meticulous attention to detail, showcases the natural history artistry of the 19th century. The intricate patterns and colors of these butterflies are brought to life through the skilled hands of Choubard and Delarue, offering a glimpse into the rich biodiversity of the natural world as documented during this period.
