EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving by Antonio Sasso, taken from Giulio Ferrario's Ancient and Modern Costumes of all the Peoples of the World, published in Florence, Italy in 1843, showcases a stunning collection of African animals. The image features three iconic species: the zebra, giraffe, and chimpanzee, each depicted with intricate detail and vibrant colors. The zebra, represented by the Equus quagga species, is shown in its distinctive black and white stripes, a pattern that provides excellent camouflage against predators. The giraffe, Giraffa camelopardalis, is depicted with its long neck reaching towards the sky, a unique adaptation that allows it to feed from the tallest branches. The endangered chimpanzee, Pan troglodytes, is portrayed in this engraving as it would have appeared in the mid-19th century. Chimpanzees are our closest living relatives, sharing over 98% of our DNA. However, their populations are under threat due to habitat loss, hunting, and disease. In the background, there is a hint of an endangered Asian orangutan, Pongo pygmaeus, also known as the Jocko. Orangutans are the world's largest tree-climbing mammals, and their populations are critically endangered due to habitat loss and fragmentation. This engraving serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving these magnificent animals and their habitats for future generations to enjoy. The intricate handcolouring and meticulous copperplate engraving techniques used in this image highlight the artistic skill and attention to detail of the time. This print is a testament to the rich natural history and cultural significance of Africa's diverse wildlife.
