EDITORS COMMENTS
Anne of Pisseleu, Duchess of Etampes, was a prominent figure in the French court during the reign of King Francis I. Known for her beauty and intelligence, she rose to prominence as the king's mistress and later became the Duchess of Etampes. In this exquisite handcoloured copperplate engraving by Georges Jacques Gatine, Anne is depicted wearing the fashionable attire of the time. She wears a chaperon headdress, a popular headcovering for women of the nobility, which is adorned with lace and pearls. Her velvet surtout, or outer robe, features a lace ruff collar and is slashed to reveal the underlying petticoat. A jeweled choker and chain belt add an air of opulence to her ensemble. Her sleeves are slashed and padded, a fashionable trend of the era, and are adorned with intricate lace cuffs. The damask petticoat peeks out from beneath her surtout, adding a splash of color to the monochromatic outfit. The intricate details of Anne's attire are a testament to the luxurious and ornate fashion of the French court during the Renaissance period.
