EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcoloured copperplate engraving showcases the grace and elegance of the Arabian Oryx or White Oryx, Oryx leucoryx. Once hailing from the Arabian Peninsula and North Africa, this vulnerable antelope species is depicted in its regal splendor, with its distinctive white coat and slender, spiral horns. The engraving, created by W. Panormo and based on an illustration by Horace S. Smith, is a testament to the intricate detail and artistry of the 19th century. It was produced for William Smellie's translation of Count Georges Buffon's renowned work, "History of the Earth and Animated Nature," published by Thomas Kelly in London in 1829. The Arabian Oryx, also known as the Arabian Antelope or the Indic White Antelope, was once believed to be extinct in the wild due to overhunting and habitat loss. However, thanks to conservation efforts, populations have been reintroduced to their native habitats in the Arabian Peninsula. This engraving serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving the world's natural wonders and the role that scientific exploration and documentation play in our understanding of the natural world. The Arabian Oryx, once a symbol of vulnerability, is now a beacon of hope for the future of endangered species.
