EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image transports us back to the 17th century, during the reign of King Charles I (1625-1649), as we behold a striking assemblage of Arquebusiers and a Cuirassier. The Arquebusiers, infantrymen armed with arquebuses - a type of long gun - are depicted here on horseback, each wielding a snaphance carbine instead of the more common arquebus. Dressed in armor, they don helmets adorned with plumes and wear distinctive feathers in their hats. Their stirrups are adorned with ornate designs, adding to their regal appearance. The Cuirassier, a cavalry soldier, stands proudly beside them. He wears a cuirass, a piece of armor that protects the front and back of the upper body, and carries a sword at his side. His helmet, adorned with a crest, and his ornate breastplate and gauntlets, speak to the grandeur and opulence of the military forces during this era. This scene is reproduced from "Instructions for the Cavallrie," published in 1632, providing a rare glimpse into the military practices and fashion of the time. The 1630s and 1640s were a period of significant change and conflict in British history, and this image offers a fascinating window into the world of the soldiers who served during this era.
