EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured lithograph depicts the Asian Pigeonwings, also known as Butterfly Peas or Darwin Peas, scientifically named Clitoria ternatea. The image is taken from Lena Lowis's "Familiar Indian Flowers with Coloured Plates," published by L. Reeve in London in 1878. Lena Lowis, formerly Selena Caroline Shakespear, was a British woman artist who traveled to India with her husband Lt.-Col. Ninian Lowis. The Asian Pigeonwings is a beautiful climbing plant native to Southeast Asia, characterized by its unique, vibrant blue pea flowers. The flowers are shaped like wings, giving them their common name, and are reminiscent of pigeon wings in flight. The plant is also known as the Bluebell Vine or Cordofan Pea due to its resemblance to the Bluebell flower and its origin in the Cordofan region of Africa. The handcoloured lithograph is a work of art in itself, with intricate details and vibrant colours bringing out the beauty of the flower. The illustration is by Lena Lowis, and the lithograph is by D. Blair. The image is a testament to the artistic skill and dedication of the artists involved in creating this beautiful representation of the Asian Pigeonwings. The publication of "Familiar Indian Flowers with Coloured Plates" was an important contribution to the scientific and artistic record of Indian flora during the colonial era. The work showcases the diversity and beauty of Indian flowers and serves as a reminder of the rich natural history of the region.
