EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, taken in 1861, the Round Room of Dublin's Mansion House is adorned with exquisite decorations for a grand ball given in honor of His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales, who would later become King Edward VII. The local journal reported that the preparations for this occasion had been meticulously planned for several weeks, with unceasing care and attention given to every detail. The walls of the Round Room were transformed by a stunning chintz fabric, its intricate patterns adding an air of elegance and sophistication. Eight large mirrors were strategically placed around the room, reflecting the twinkling candles and the lively social scene. The mirrors contributed significantly to the overall effect, creating an illusion of spaciousness and enhancing the grandeur of the event. The Prince of Wales' visit to Ireland in 1861 was a significant social occasion, and this ball at the Mansion House was one of the highlights of the royal tour. The Round Room, with its beautiful decorations and inviting atmosphere, provided the perfect setting for an unforgettable evening of dancing, dining, and merriment. The photograph captures a moment in time, a testament to the opulence and grandeur of the 1860s, and the warm welcome extended to the future king by the people of Dublin.
