EDITORS COMMENTS
Balm of Gilead, Commiphora gileadensis (Balsamodendron opobalsamum), is depicted in this exquisite handcoloured lithograph by Hanhart, based on a botanical illustration by David Blair from Robert Bentley and Henry Trimen's "Medicinal Plants" published in London in 1880. The Balm of Gilead, also known as Opobalsamum or Balsam of Mecca, is a small tree or shrub native to the Arabian Peninsula and Eastern Africa. Its resinous sap has been used for medicinal and religious purposes since ancient times. The Balm of Gilead tree is characterized by its small, oblong leaves and yellow or white flowers. The sap, which exudes from the tree when it is wounded, is a sticky, aromatic substance that has been used to treat a variety of ailments, including wounds, burns, and skin conditions. In traditional medicine, it has also been used as an anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, and antispasmodic. The botanical illustration captures the intricate details of the Balm of Gilead tree, from its slender branches and small leaves to the resin-covered buds and flowers. The handcolouring adds depth and richness to the image, bringing out the vibrant hues of the tree's bark, leaves, and flowers. Robert Bentley and Henry Trimen's "Medicinal Plants" was a groundbreaking work that documented over 5,000 medicinal plants from around the world. The publication of this work marked a significant contribution to the field of botany and pharmacology, providing a comprehensive record of the medicinal properties of plants and their uses in various traditional systems of medicine. This beautiful lithograph of the Balm of Gilead is a testament to the beauty and diversity of the natural world and the importance of documenting its medicinal properties for future generations.
