This lithograph depicts a female Barbary lion (Panthera leo barbaricus), an extinct subspecies of lion once native to North Africa. The image is a masterpiece created by the skilled hand of Karl Joseph Brodtmann, as part of Heinrich Rudolf Schinz's Illustrated Natural History of Men and Animals, published in 1836. The Barbary lion, also known as the North African lion or Atlas lion, was a distinct population of lions that roamed the Atlas Mountains and the Maghreb region. They were larger and darker than their African counterparts, with a distinctive mane that was shorter and wavier. Unfortunately, this magnificent creature is no longer with us. The Barbary lion became extinct in the wild in the late 1950s or early 1960s, primarily due to habitat loss and human persecution. The last known Barbary lion in captivity, named Bubastis, died in 1954 at the Berlin Zoological Garden. This beautiful lithograph serves as a poignant reminder of the Barbary lion's majesty and the importance of preserving endangered species.
