EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured copperplate stipple engraving depicts the Blue Field Madder, or Sherardia arvensis, a plant native to Europe, Asia, and North America. The illustration is taken from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Sciences, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The meticulous detail in this work is a testament to the skill of the illustrator, Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, who is considered one of the greatest French botanical illustrators of the 19th century. The Blue Field Madder is a low-growing herb with blue or purple flowers that bloom in the summer. The plant was once used for dyeing textiles and was known as 'Argentan Blue' or 'Greater Argonaut Blue' due to its resemblance to the color of the argonauta, or the common argonaut octopus. The argonaut, also known as the 'sailor's octopus' or 'voyaging octopus,' is a marine cephalopod that is known for its ability to travel long distances by hitchhiking on the undersides of ships or floating debris. The intricate detail in this engraving is evident in the veining of the leaves, the delicate petals of the flower, and the tiny hairs on the stems. The use of handcolouring adds an additional layer of depth and vibrancy to the image. The illustration is surrounded by intricate decorative elements, including a vase filled with the Blue Field Madder, a compass, and a drawing of an ancient Greek sailor holding a staff with the argonauta octopus at the top. These elements add to the historical and scientific significance of the work, making it a valuable addition to any botanical or natural history collection.
