EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the moment British troops, led by Sir Hugh Gough, entered the historic city of Multan in present-day Pakistan on 22nd January 1849, during the Second Anglo-Sikh War (1848-1849). The Second Anglo-Sikh War was a significant conflict between the British East India Company and the Sikh Empire, which had expanded its territories in the region during the previous decades. The photograph shows British soldiers marching down a bustling street, surrounded by intricately designed buildings that reflect Multan's rich history and architectural heritage. The soldiers, dressed in their red coats and bearskins, appear determined and focused as they advance through the city, while local residents look on curiously from doorways and rooftops. The Second Anglo-Sikh War ended with the signing of the Treaty of Lahore in March 1849, which ceded several territories to the British East India Company. Multan, an important city in the Sikh Empire, became a part of British India. This photograph provides a fascinating glimpse into a pivotal moment in the history of South Asia, offering a unique perspective on the military, cultural, and architectural landscape of Multan during the 1840s.
