Babyrousa Buffon Buru Complements Lesson Primevere Rene Babirusa Babyrussa Moluccan

EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving depicts the Buru babirusa, also known as the Moluccan babirusa or Babyrousa babyrussa. The babirusa is a unique and intriguing species of pig native to the islands of Sulawesi, Buru, and other smaller islands in Indonesia. This engraving is taken from Rene Primevere's "Lessons Complements de Buffon," published by Pourrat Freres in Paris in 1838. The babirusa is easily identified by its distinctive tusks, which are not only long and curved but also grow downwards from the upper jaw, forming a distinctive "scimitar" shape. This adaptation allows the babirusa to defend itself against predators and to forage in dense vegetation. The pig's snout is also elongated, which helps it to root through the ground in search of food. The babirusa is a critical endangered species, with an estimated population of only around 2,500 individuals. Habitat loss, hunting, and competition with domestic pigs are the primary threats to its survival. This engraving serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving the natural world and the unique creatures that inhabit it. Buffon's "Natural History" was a groundbreaking work that helped to advance the scientific understanding of the natural world. The "Lessons Complements" were a series of supplementary illustrations that accompanied the main text, providing detailed and accurate depictions of the various species described. This engraving of the babirusa is a testament to the high-quality production values of the time and the importance of visual representation in scientific research.
