EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking copperplate engraving from the 17th century work "De Roomsche Monarchy" by Francois Salma and Abraham Bogaerts, we find a powerful depiction of Byzantine Emperor Leo III, also known as Leo III the Isaurian or Leo III the Syrian (685-741 AD). Leo III is shown here in imperial regalia, seated on a throne with a scepter in his right hand and a globe in his left. The emperor's imperial robes are adorned with intricate gold and jewel encrustments, symbolizing his divine right to rule. Leo III is flanked by his son and co-emperor, Constantine V, also known as Constantine V Copronymus or Constantine V the Dung-thrower (718-775 AD). The name "Copronymus" was given to Constantine V due to his infamous act of throwing dung at an icon of Christ during a religious dispute, which earned him the derogatory nickname. The engraving is a testament to the classical artistic influences that permeated the European artistic scene during the 17th century. The imperial portraits bear a striking resemblance to the portraits of Roman Caesars and Germanic Kaisers, reflecting the enduring influence of the ancient Roman and Greek artistic traditions on European art. Leo III was a significant figure in Byzantine history, known for his military reforms and religious policies. He played a crucial role in the Iconoclast Controversy, a theological dispute over the veneration of icons. Despite the controversy, Leo III's reign marked a period of political stability and cultural flourishing in the Byzantine Empire. This copperplate engraving is a valuable historical artifact, providing a glimpse into the artistic and political milieu of the 17th century, as well as shedding light on the rich history of the Byzantine Empire.
