EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored steel engraving depicts the Cape bunting, Emberiza capensis, also known as the Yellow-bellied bunting or the Fringilla capensis. The image is taken from William John Swainson's seminal work, "Birds of Western Africa," published in Sir William Jardine's Naturalists Library: Ornithology, in Edinburgh in 1837. Swainson, a renowned English naturalist and illustrator, meticulously documented this bird species during his travels in South Africa. The Cape bunting is a small, strikingly beautiful bird with distinctive features. In this engraving, we see a mature bird in vibrant detail. The head is adorned with a violet-turquoise cap, while the rest of the body is predominantly brown with yellow underparts. The bird is perched on a branch, gazing intently at a plantain leaf on which a musophaga violacea, or turaco, is feeding. The turaco, with its iridescent blue-purple plumage and red eyes, adds an intriguing element to the scene. The intricate details of the Cape bunting's plumage and the lifelike representation of the turaco are a testament to the skill of the engraver, William Lizars. The hand-coloring further enhances the visual appeal of the print, making it a stunning addition to any natural history collection.
