EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking handcoloured lithograph, Cardinal Leon Potier de Gesvres, Bishop of Bourges, is depicted in his full ecclesiastical regalia. Born in 1656, Potier de Gesvres rose through the ranks of the Catholic Church to become a prominent figure in French religious and political circles. The cardinal is shown wearing the traditional robes of a high-ranking member of the clergy. He wears a long, red cassock, or soutane, which is fastened at the waist with a sash, or cinture. Over the cassock, he wears a white surplice, which is adorned with gold lace and fringes. The cardinal's most distinguishing feature, however, is the scarlet robe, or mantua, which is draped over his shoulders and fastened with a brooch at the neck. The mantua is lined with ermine fur, a symbol of high ecclesiastical rank. The cardinal's head is covered by a biretta, a small, round hat with a tall, pointed top. The hat is adorned with a tassel and a cross, symbolizing his status as a cardinal. In his right hand, he holds a pastoral staff, a symbol of his pastoral duties as a bishop. This image of Cardinal Leon Potier de Gesvres was created as part of the "Costumes Historiques de la France" series, published by Le Bibliophile Jacob, also known as Paul Lacroix, in Paris in 1852. The series aimed to document and preserve the historical costumes of France, making it an invaluable resource for scholars and enthusiasts of French history and culture. This particular lithograph was created from a contemporary engraving, adding to its historical authenticity.
