EDITORS COMMENTS
Catechu, scientifically known as Acacia catechu, is a large, thorny tree native to South Asia, particularly in India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh. This chromolithograph is an exquisite botanical illustration of the tree and its bark, as depicted in Hermann Adolph Koehler's Medicinal Plants, edited by Gustav Pabst, published in Germany in 1887. The tree is also known by various other names, including Senegalia catechu, black cutch, and catechu tree. The bark of the catechu tree is the source of a valuable medicinal substance that has been used for centuries in traditional Ayurvedic and Unani medicine. The bark is rich in tannins, particularly catechin and epicatechin, which give it its astringent properties. Catechu has been used to treat a variety of ailments, including diarrhea, dysentery, and fevers. It has also been used as a mouthwash and a gargle to treat oral diseases. The illustration shows the tree in full glory, with its large, compound leaves and thorny branches. The bark of the tree is prominently featured, with its rough, deeply furrowed surface and the characteristic longitudinal fissures. The intricate details of the tree's anatomy are beautifully captured, providing a fascinating glimpse into the natural world and the medicinal properties of this remarkable plant.
