EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored engraving showcases the vibrant and intricately patterned plumage of the Cinnamon Roller or Broad-billed Roller (Eurystomus glaucurus glaucurus), also known as the Madagascar Roller or Madagascar Variety of the Coracias madagascariensis. The Roller is a medium-sized bird belonging to the roller family, Coraciidae, and is native to the African continent, with the Madagascar subspecies being endemic to that island. Charles Hamilton Smith, a renowned English natural history illustrator, created the original illustration for this engraving from a specimen in the collection of Harriet Drews, a prominent British naturalist and collector. The illustration was later published in Edward Griffiths' seminal work, "The Animal Kingdom" by the Baron Cuvier, released in London by Whittaker in 1829. The Cinnamon Roller derives its name from the rich, cinnamon-brown coloration of its plumage. The broad, decurved bill, which gives the bird its other common name, is a striking feature, measuring up to 2 inches in length. The Roller is a highly adaptable and omnivorous bird, feeding on a variety of insects, reptiles, amphibians, and small vertebrates. The Roller is known for its distinctive flight pattern, which involves undulating wingbeats and gliding through the air. They are also renowned for their acrobatic aerial displays, which involve rolling in mid-air while emitting a loud, rolling call. These birds are monogamous and nest in tree cavities or abandoned woodpecker holes, laying a clutch of 3-5 eggs. This beautiful engraving offers a captivating glimpse into the natural history of this fascinating and visually striking bird species. The intricate details of the plumage, the vibrant colors, and the lifelike quality of the illustration serve as a testament to the skill and artistry of Charles Hamilton Smith and the dedication of Harriet Drews in documenting the natural world.
