EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured lithograph, taken from John O. Westwood's new edition of Dru Drury's Illustrations of Exotic Entomology published by Bohn, London in 1837, showcases an enchanting collection of rare and exotic butterflies. The image features three distinct species: the Common Glider, Cymothoe caenis, the Original Club-dot Sailer, Neptis melicerta, and the Smoky Orange Tip, Colotis euippe omphale. The Common Glider, depicted in the first and second frames, is a striking butterfly with a wingspan of approximately 7.6 centimeters. The male is characterized by its dark brown wings with iridescent blue spots and a series of thin white lines that form a wavy pattern along the edges. The female, not shown in this image, is similar in size and shape but has a more subdued coloration. The Original Club-dot Sailer, displayed in frames three and four, is a medium-sized butterfly with a wingspan of around 7 centimeters. The male is easily identified by its bright orange wings with black clubs at the tips of the forewings and a series of small white spots along the edges. The female, also not shown, has a similar wingspan but is brown with orange spots and no black clubs. The Smoky Orange Tip, illustrated in frames five and six, is a small butterfly with a wingspan of about 5 centimeters. The male is characterized by its smoky gray wings with orange tips and a series of small black spots along the edges. The female, again not shown, is similar in size and shape but has a more subdued coloration with gray wings and orange tips. This beautiful and intricately detailed lithograph, handcoloured by skilled artists, provides a glimpse into the fascinating world of exotic butterflies and the meticulous work of natural history illustration in the 19th century.
