EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving, created by Antonio Sasso for Giulio Ferrario's "Ancient and Modern Costumes of all the Peoples of the World" published in Florence, Italy in 1843, showcases the grandeur and regality of the King and a Nobleman of the Kongo, an African kingdom located in present-day Angola and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The King, dressed in a magnificent costume, dons a tall, conical hat adorned with intricate patterns and a broad brim, which not only served as a symbol of his royal status but also protected him from the harsh African sun. His cloak, made from richly textured fabric, is draped over his shoulders, while a voluminous, pleated skirt covers his lower body. The King's scimitar, a curved sword, is held in his right hand, signifying his power and authority. The Nobleman, standing beside the King, also wears a similar hat and carries a scimitar. His clothing consists of a long, flowing robe, which is secured at the waist with a sash. The intricate patterns and vibrant colours of their costumes reflect the rich cultural heritage and artistic traditions of the Kongo people. This illustration offers a fascinating glimpse into the history and customs of the Kongo Kingdom during the 19th century, providing valuable insight into the lives of its rulers and nobility. The meticulous attention to detail in the handcoloured engraving brings the image to life, making it a captivating and visually stunning representation of African royalty.
