EDITORS COMMENTS
This set of handcoloured lithographs showcases the elegant and ornate court costumes of gentlemen during the mid-17th century in France. The first image on the left, from page 1646, depicts a gentleman dressed in a richly embroidered doublet and breeches, adorned with lace and gold braid. His collar is edged with lace, and he wears a matching waistcoat and stockings. A voluminous cloak, also embellished with gold and lace, is draped over his shoulders. The second gentleman, from page 1664, is equally impressive in his attire. He dons a doublet with a high, ruffled collar, and a matching waistcoat and breeches. His cloak, which features a large, fur-trimmed hood, adds an air of grandeur to his appearance. Moving on to the right side of the print, the gentleman on page 1648 is dressed in a more subdued yet equally elegant costume. His doublet, which is decorated with simple gold braid and lace, is paired with matching breeches and a waistcoat. A simple, plain cloak completes his outfit. Lastly, the gentleman on page 1678 is a study in contrasts. He wears a black doublet and breeches, with a white lace collar and cuffs. His cloak, which is also black, is trimmed with white fur. These stunning court costumes are taken from the portfolio X of Le Bibliophile Jacob, also known as Paul Lacroix's Costumes Historiques de la France. Published in Paris by the Administration de Librairie in 1852, this collection of lithographs is a testament to the opulence and sophistication of the French court during the 17th century. The intricate details and vibrant colours of these handcoloured lithographs provide a fascinating glimpse into the world of the French courtier, offering a glimpse into the past that is both beautiful and captivating.
