EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving showcases the Coypu, scientifically known as Myocastor coypu, also referred to as the river rat, nut-rat, or Hydromys coupus. Depicted in intricate detail, this rodent is a native of South America, primarily found in wetland habitats such as marshes, swamps, and along riverbanks. The Coypu is a large semi-aquatic rodent, with a body length of up to 50 cm and a weight of up to 5 kg. Its coat is brownish-gray, with a lighter underbelly, and its hind legs are longer and stronger than its front legs, allowing it to swim efficiently. Its elongated, flat, and scaly tail acts as a rudder while swimming, and its webbed hind feet provide excellent propulsion. The Coypu is an omnivorous species, feeding on a variety of vegetation, fruits, nuts, and aquatic plants. It is also known to consume a significant amount of bark, which it gnaws to obtain the nutrients and minerals found within. This engraving, taken from Edward Griffiths' "The Animal Kingdom" by the renowned French naturalist Georges Cuvier, published in London by Whittaker in 1825, offers a glimpse into the natural history of this fascinating creature. The meticulous handcolouring adds depth and texture to the engraving, making it a stunning addition to any collection of natural history or zoology.
