This handcoloured copperplate engraving depicts the Cuban hutia, Capromys pilorides, also known as Desmarest's hutia or Capromys furnieri. The Cuban hutia is a large rodent endemic to Cuba and is the largest living hutia species. They are named after the French naturalist Frédéric Cuvier, who described the species in 1821. The Cuban hutia is characterized by its stocky build, short limbs, and a long, bushy tail. They have a thick, greyish-brown coat, with a lighter underbelly. Their ears are small and rounded, and their eyes are small and beady. They have sharp claws and strong hind limbs, which they use to dig burrows in the ground. The Cuban hutia is an omnivorous species, feeding on a variety of vegetation, fruits, and small animals. They are primarily nocturnal and are solitary animals, living in burrows that they dig in the ground. They are also known to be excellent swimmers and can be found near water sources. This engraving is taken from Rene Primevere's "Lessons Complements de Buffon," published by Pourrat Freres in Paris in 1838. The work was a complement to the "Histoire Naturelle, Générale et Particulière" by Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon. The engraving is a testament to the detailed and accurate illustrations produced during the era of natural history exploration and documentation.
