EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is taken from Curtis's British Entomology, a seminal work in the field of entomology published between 1824 and 1839. Plate 108 showcases the striking Coleoptera, or beetle, species Paederus fuscipes, also known as the New Forest Paederus. The beetle is depicted in intricate detail, with its elongated body, distinctive markings, and powerful mandibles on full display. The Paederus fuscipes is a member of the Lucanidae, or stag beetle, family, and is native to Europe. The species is known for its impressive size, with some individuals reaching up to 7 centimeters in length. The photograph also features the elegant plant Leucojum aestivum, commonly known as Summer Snowflake, in the foreground. This beautiful plant is a bulbous perennial that blooms with delicate, white, star-shaped flowers in late spring. The Summer Snowflake is native to Europe and Asia, and is a popular ornamental plant due to its striking appearance. John Curtis, FLS, was the esteemed English botanist and entomologist who oversaw the publication of Curtis's British Entomology. The work was a groundbreaking achievement in its time, featuring high-quality illustrations of a wide range of insect species, many of which were meticulously hand-colored. This image offers a glimpse into the natural history of the 1820s and 1830s, providing a window into a bygone era when the study of the natural world was a source of fascination and wonder. The intricate detail and beautiful composition of the image make it a must-have for any collection focused on natural history, entomology, or botany.
