EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is taken from Curtis's British Entomology, Plate 509, featuring the Concolourous Hover-fly, scientifically known as Scaeva pyrastri or Scaeva unicolor. The intricately detailed illustration, produced between 1824 and 1839, was created during the 19th century by the renowned English botanist and entomologist John Curtis FLS. The Hover-fly, a member of the Diptera family, is depicted in mid-flight above the fragrant Barren Strawberry plant, Potentilla sterilis, or Fragaria sterilis. The plant, with its small, white, star-shaped flowers, creates a beautiful contrast against the black background, allowing the vibrant colors of the Hover-fly to truly shine. The Concolourous Hover-fly is easily recognizable by its distinctive yellow and black stripes, with the yellow bands extending from its thorax to its abdomen. Hover-flies are often mistaken for bees due to their appearance and behavior, but they are actually harmless insects that feed on nectar and aid in pollination. This stunning plate is a testament to the meticulous work of John Curtis and the dedication of the scientific community during the 1800s to document and classify the natural world. It is a valuable addition to any collection of historical entomology and botany, and a reminder of the rich biodiversity that exists within our natural world.
