EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite print is a beautiful example of the intricate detail and scientific precision that characterized the works of John Curtis and his team during the 1820s and 1830s. Entitled Plate 638 from Curtis's British Entomology, it features the Coleoptera species Quedius lateralis, a member of the family Staphylinidae, commonly known as rove beetles. The Quedius lateralis is depicted in meticulous detail, with each scale and contour of its elongated, slender body rendered with remarkable accuracy. The beetle's legs are extended, revealing the tiny hairs and spines that cover its feet, providing traction on various surfaces. Its antennae, curved and segmented, are held aloft, adding to the sense of movement and vitality. The background of the print is adorned with a delicate floral pattern, adding an aesthetic appeal to the scientific illustration. The Latin name of the species, Quedius lateralis, is inscribed at the bottom, along with the title of the work, "British Entomology," and the initials of the illustrator, FLS, which stand for Fellow of the Linnean Society. John Curtis (1791-1862) was a prolific and influential British naturalist and entomologist. His publication, British Entomology, was a groundbreaking work that covered a wide range of insects, including beetles, bees, and flies. The series was published between 1824 and 1839 and remains an essential reference for entomologists and natural history enthusiasts to this day. This stunning print is a testament to the dedication and expertise of John Curtis and his team, who meticulously documented the natural world around them, capturing the beauty and complexity of the Coleoptera species for future generations to appreciate and learn from.
