EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is taken from Curtis's British Entomology, a seminal work in the field of entomology published between 1824 and 1839. The plate in question is number 646, featuring the Coleoptera, or beetle, species Ptinus sexpunctatus, previously known as Ptinus 6-punctatus. The beetle can be seen delicately perched on the petals of a Veronica spicata ssp. hybrida, commonly known as Welch Speedwell. The intricate details of both the beetle and the plant are expertly captured, showcasing the exceptional illustrative skills of the time. The Coleoptera order is the largest group of insects, with over 350,000 described species. The Ptinus species, part of the family Lepidoteridae, are often referred to as "seed-boring beetles" due to their habit of laying their eggs in seeds. In this image, the six distinct punctations on the elytra, or wing cases, of the Ptinus beetle are clearly visible. The Veronica spicata ssp. hybrida is a beautiful and hardy plant, native to Europe and western Asia. It is characterized by its tall spikes of blue, purple, or white flowers. The plant's common name, Welch Speedwell, is derived from its historical cultivation in Wales and its ability to bloom early in the season. This exquisite print is a testament to the rich natural history knowledge of the 19th century, a time when the study of insects and their relationships with plants was a burgeoning field of scientific inquiry. The intricate details of the beetle and the plant, as well as the elegant composition of the image, make it a valuable addition to any collection of natural history prints.
