Descendants of Aaron giving the benediction to the people
This Priestly Blessing or priestly benediction, also referred to in rabbinic literature as Dukhanen, is a Hebrew prayer recited by Kohanim, (Hebrew Priests, descendants of Aaron). According to the Torah ( the five books of Moses) Aaron, a high priest and brother of Moses, blessed the people after offering sacrifices and promises. He stated that he would place his name on the Kohanim (hebrew priests) hands and bless the Jews. This practice still occurs today in Jewish synagogues where Kohanim bless the worshipers in the synagogue during special Jewish prayer services. This engraving is of the synagogue of the Portuguese Jews at The Hague. Date: 1737

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative engraving depicts the descendants of Aaron, the ancient Hebrew priests, bestowing the Priestly Blessing upon the congregation in the synagogue of the Portuguese Jews at The Hague. Dating back to the Torah, the five books of Moses, Aaron, the high priest and brother of Moses, blessed the Israelites after offering sacrifices and invoking divine favor. The tradition of Kohanim, descendants of Aaron, continuing this sacred practice is deeply rooted in Jewish faith and customs. As depicted in this 18th-century engraving, the Kohanim would place their hands upon the heads of the worshippers, invoking God's blessings through the power vested in them as descendants of Aaron. The Priestly Blessing, also known as Dukhanen in rabbinic literature, is a poignant reminder of the rich history and unbroken chain of tradition within the Jewish community. The synagogue of the Portuguese Jews at The Hague, a historic site, serves as the backdrop for this moving scene. The Portuguese Jewish community, which has a long and complex history, has preserved this ancient practice, ensuring that the Priestly Blessing continues to be recited in Jewish synagogues during special prayer services. This engraving, created in 1737, offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the deep connection between the Jewish people, their faith, and their traditions. The Priestly Blessing remains a powerful symbol of unity, continuity, and the enduring strength of the Jewish community.
