Di Huang, or Rehmannia glutinosa, is a perennial herb native to China that has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for over 2,000 years. This handcoloured lithograph from the renowned horticultural publication "Flore des Serres et des Jardins de l Europe" by Louis van Houtte and Charles Lemaires, published in Ghent, Belgium in 1856, beautifully captures the intricacies of this important medicinal plant. Di Huang, also known as Sheng Di Huang or Gan Shen, is a key component in many traditional Chinese formulas, particularly those used to tonify the kidneys and nourish the yin.
