EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning chromolithograph by Adolf Glitsch, based on an illustration by Ernst Haeckel from his seminal work "Art Forms in Nature" (Kunstformen der Natur), showcases a captivating collection of Discomedusae jellyfish species. The image features the Lions Mane Jellyfish (Cyanea annasethe, 1), the Floresca Jellyfish (species unknown, 2), the Mediterranean Lions Mane Jellyfish (Discomedes mediterranea, 3), and the Compass Jellyfish (Chrysaora hysoscella, 4). Discomedusae jellyfish are characterized by their large, umbrella-shaped bells and long, trailing tentacles. The Lions Mane Jellyfish, also known as the Mane of Manes, is the largest species in the Discomedusae family, with bell diameters reaching up to 2 meters. Its long, flowing tentacles can extend up to 45 meters and are covered in small, stinging cells called nematocysts. The Floresca Jellyfish, with its intricate, lace-like bell, is a lesser-known species that is often found in the Mediterranean and the Atlantic Ocean. The Mediterranean Lions Mane Jellyfish, also known as the Desmonema or Promethea Jellyfish, is a close relative of the Lions Mane Jellyfish and is characterized by its long, trailing tentacles and a bell that can reach up to 1.5 meters in diameter. The Compass Jellyfish, also known as the Northern Hemisphere Jellyfish or the Barrel Jellyfish, is a unique species that can roll itself into a barrel-shaped ball when disturbed, making it difficult for predators to attack. Its bell is typically small, with a diameter of only 15 cm, and its tentacles are short and retractable. This beautiful and intricate artwork not only showcases the natural beauty of these enigmatic creatures but also highlights the remarkable detail and precision of the chromolithographic printing process. Ernst Haeckel's work continues to inspire and captivate audiences with its stunning depictions of the natural world.
