EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts two exquisitely detailed representations of the enigmatic and extinct bird species known as Dodos. The left image, titled "Dood Paet" or "Dead Dodo," is attributed to the renowned Flemish engraver Adriaen van de Venne. Created in 1626, this heliotype is believed to be one of the earliest and most accurate depictions of the Dodo based on actual specimens. The Dodo, identified as Raphus cucullatus, was a flightless bird endemic to the island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. The right image, titled "Een Levendig Dood," or "A Living Dodo," is attributed to the Dutch painter Gillis de Hondecoeter (Honderkoeter). This masterpiece, also created in 1626, showcases the Dodo in a more lifelike and dynamic pose, with its distinctive red wattles and featherless, scaly skin. This heliotype was produced from the original painting by the Dutch heliotype artist Van Leer for Dr. Anthonie Cornelis Oudemans' seminal work, "Dodo Studies," published in Amsterdam by Johannes Muller in 1917. These captivating images offer a glimpse into the natural history of this fascinating and now extinct bird species, providing valuable insights into their appearance and unique characteristics. The intricate details and lifelike qualities of these depictions continue to captivate ornithologists, natural historians, and art enthusiasts alike, making them invaluable resources for the study of the Dodo and its place in history.
