The Dream Pedlar - A Creature of Gossamer
A Creature who looked as though made of Film or Gossamer - illustration in The Dream Pedlar by Lady Margaret Sackville. Florence Mary Anderson / Molly MacArthur (1893-1972) had two distinct styles of illustration. From the middle of the 1920s, she moved on from earlier highly-decorative fairy art (as shown here) to produce beautiful monotone woodcuts in a distinctly oriental style. This artwork (as seen here) was produced under the name Molly MacArthur, or F.M. MacArthur. Date: 1914

EDITORS COMMENTS
is an enchanting illustration taken from Lady Margaret Sackville's book, created by the talented artist Florence Mary Anderson, working under the name Molly MacArthur. This artwork dates back to 1914, showcasing the artist's earlier, highly-decorative fairy art style. The image features a dreamlike peddler, who appears to be made entirely of gossamer or film. The ethereal figure, with delicate wings and a flowing, diaphanous robe, carries a woven basket brimming with intricately designed objects. The scene is set against a backdrop of a serene, moonlit landscape, with twinkling stars and a crescent moon adding to the magical atmosphere. Lady Margaret Sackville, an English poet and author, collaborated with Anderson to create a series of illustrations for her book. Anderson's unique artistic vision brought the whimsical tales to life, captivating the hearts of readers in the early 1900s. At this time in her career, Anderson was known as Molly MacArthur or F.M. MacArthur. Her work during the 1910s and early 1920s was characterized by its intricate detail and rich, vibrant colors. This illustration, with its delicate gossamer creature, is a testament to her remarkable talent and her ability to transport the viewer to a world of dreams and enchantment. This artwork stands as a timeless piece of early 20th-century illustration, inviting us to explore the realms of imagination and the mysteries of the dream world.
