EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant bas-relief by Jan Kettering, titled "We went and came back after years," commemorates the Dutch Border Battalions who once guarded the town of Grave in Holland. The statue, which was unveiled on October 31, 1964, depicts a soldier standing vigilantly, symbolizing the long history of military presence in this town. Grave had served as a garrison town for centuries, with troops stationed there to protect its strategic location. However, the soldiers were withdrawn in 1892, leaving the town to return to civilian life. In the late 1930s, as tensions rose in Europe and the Low Countries began to fortify their defenses against Germany's military aggression, the Army returned to Grave. The town became a command center for border battalions, which were formed and mobilized in 1938 to guard the Grave bridge and other key locations. The brave men who served in these battalions came under the command of a headquarters in Grave, and they stood ready to defend their country against the threat of invasion. Although the exact date of this photograph is 2001, the memory of their sacrifice and dedication lives on in this powerful and moving tribute.
