Essex Yeomanry Memorial, German Bunker Gold Beach

The Essex came ashore here at O730 on D-Day equipped with Sherman DD (Duplex Drive) tanks and Sextons (self-propelled 25 pdr guns). Yeomanry Regiments are rarely mentioned in the accounts of D-Day - the Official History does not mention the Essex at all. They do have a Memorial in the grounds of the Bayeux Museum, as does their partner Regiment the Notts (Sherwood Rangers) Yeomanry. Date: 2009

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the Essex Yeomanry Memorial, located on Gold Beach in Normandy, France. The Essex Yeomanry Regiment, along with their partner regiment, the Nottinghamshire (Sherwood Rangers) Yeomanry, played a crucial role in the D-Day landings on June 6, 1944. At 0730 hours, the Essex Yeomanry came ashore here, equipped with innovative Sherman DD (Duplex Drive) tanks and Sextons, which were self-propelled 25 pdr guns. These vehicles allowed the soldiers to move quickly and effectively in the amphibious assault, providing crucial firepower and support for the infantry as they advanced inland. Despite their significant contribution to the success of the D-Day landings, the Essex Yeomanry are often overlooked in historical accounts. The Official History of the Second World War does not mention the Essex Regiment at all. However, their bravery and sacrifice are commemorated through this memorial in the grounds of the Bayeux Museum. The Essex Yeomanry and the Nottinghamshire (Sherwood Rangers) Yeomanry were among the many brave regiments that made up the larger Allied force that invaded Normandy on D-Day. Their presence here on Gold Beach serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by these soldiers and the pivotal role they played in the liberation of Europe during World War II.
