Eusebius Church parachutists, Arnhem, Holland

The original church was built between 1452 and 1650. During German occupation most of the church bells were, as with many Dutch churches, taken away to be melted down for the German war effort. In the September 1944 Operation Market Garden battle and by artillery fire in the following winter, the church was reduced to a shell. In the autumn of 1945 it was decided to re-build it in the original style. Work began in 1947 but was not completed until 1964. New bells were installed in 1992-1994 with some named in Commemoration of those who fought - Irish, Scotch (sic), Welsh, English, Polish, Canadians, Americans and Dutch. From the vaulted arches of the Chapel, nineteen bronze parachutists appear to be descending. Designed by Simona Vergani, this dramatic and moving sculpture group was a gift of the Burgesses of Arnhem in 1994. Date: 2000

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the Eusebius Church in Arnhem, Holland, a historic building with a poignant past. Originally constructed between 1452 and 1650, the church was severely damaged during the September 1944 Operation Market Garden battle and subsequent artillery fire. In the aftermath of the war, it was decided to rebuild the church in its original style, with work commencing in 1947 and completion in 1964. Among the new additions to the restored church is a striking sculpture group of nineteen bronze parachutists, suspended from the vaulted arches of the Chapel. Designed by Italian artist Simona Vergani, this dramatic and moving tribute was a gift of the Burgesses of Arnhem in 1994. The parachutists represent the Allied forces who fought in the Battle of Arnhem, including the Irish, Scots, Welsh, English, Poles, Canadians, Americans, and Dutch. The sculpture serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during the conflict, with the parachutists seemingly descending from the heavens to protect and reclaim the hallowed grounds of the Eusebius Church. This powerful image encapsulates the spirit of resilience and renewal that characterized the post-war rebuilding efforts in Arnhem and beyond.
