EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured lithograph showcases three exotic longhorn beetles: Stenodontes damicornis (1), Mallodon dasystomus (2), and Nothopleurus maxillosus (3). Originally published in the new edition of Dru Drury's Illustrations of Exotic Entomology, by John O. Westwood for Bohn, London, in 1837, this image offers a glimpse into the rich biodiversity of the insect world during the 19th century. The first beetle depicted is Stenodontes damicornis, also known as the hardwood stump borer. With its vibrant, iridescent green elytra (wing cases) and distinctive long antennae adorned with white spots, this beetle is a true marvel of nature. Mallodon dasystomus, the second beetle in the illustration, is commonly referred to as the large-mouthed longhorn beetle. Its elytra display a beautiful, intricate pattern of brown and gold, while its large, curved mandibles give it an impressive and distinctive appearance. Lastly, Nothopleurus maxillosus, or the large-headed longhorn beetle, boasts a striking combination of black and red elytra, with noticeably large, protruding mandibles. These exquisitely detailed handcoloured lithographs not only serve as a testament to the artistic skills of the time but also provide valuable insights into the natural history of these fascinating longhorn beetles. The illustrations offer a glimpse into the world of Coleoptera, the largest order of insects, and the rich diversity of exotic species that continue to captivate our imagination.
