EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured lithograph showcases an enchanting assembly of exotic moths, meticulously rendered from nature and published in the new edition of Dru Drury's Illustrations of Exotic Entomology by John O. Westwood in 1837. The intricately detailed image features five distinct species: the Achemon Sphinx (Eumorpha achemon, number 1), Macroglossum Passalus (Macroglossum passalus, number 2), Glaucopis pulchra (number 3), and Manduca brontes (number 4). The Achemon Sphinx, also known as the Large Luna Moth, is a striking creature with its iridescent green wings and prominent eyespots. The Macroglossum Passalus, commonly referred to as the Honey Pot Moth, derives its name from the distinctive sac-like structure on its abdomen, which it uses to store nectar. The Glaucopis pulchra, or the Beautiful Glaucopis, is a small moth with intricately patterned wings and a distinctive metallic sheen. Lastly, the Manduca brontes, or the Giant Swallowtail Moth, is a large and impressive moth with vibrant wings adorned with striking yellow and black markings. This exquisite work of art, produced during the 19th century, is a testament to the fascination and curiosity that exotic insects held for naturalists and collectors of the time. The meticulous attention to detail and the vibrant colours of the handcoloured lithograph bring these enchanting creatures to life, allowing us to appreciate their beauty and intricacy even today.
