EDITORS COMMENTS
Step right up and welcome to the London Hippodrome, an architectural marvel of the late Victorian era that opened its doors to the public in January 1900. This stunning exterior photograph captures the grandeur of the building as it proudly displayed its newly unveiled facade. Designed by the renowned theatre architect Frank Matcham for Edward Moss and his Moss Empires Limited, the London Hippodrome was a testament to the power of entertainment in the heart of London's West End. In its first decade, the Hippodrome was a hub for circus and variety acts, with its most notable feature being the large water tank that could be raised hydraulically from underneath the auditorium, creating breathtaking water spectacles for audiences. The building's distinctive dome and ornate detailing were a sight to behold, drawing in crowds from all corners of the city. Over the years, the London Hippodrome underwent a number of changes, with the most notable being its transformation into The Talk of the Town from 1958 to 1982. Today, the building stands as the Hippodrome Casino, a popular destination for entertainment and leisure in the Charing Cross Road area. This photograph offers a glimpse into London's rich theatrical history, transporting us back to a time when the London Hippodrome was a beacon of excitement and wonder in the West End.
